Abstract
Objectives: The levels of state anxiety and trait anxiety were investigated in individuals with hearing loss.
Patients and methods: Using Spielberger's continuous state anxiety inventory, 86 hearing loss individuals who were verified to be over 14 years of age were evaluated.
Results: There was a significant difference between the genders when they were evaluated with the state anxiety inventory. However, there was no difference in trait anxiety inventory. When state and trait inventory was applied according to age of hearing aid use, there was a significant relationship between age and state anxiety. There were significant differences between the groups according to degree of hearing loss when the state anxiety inventory results were compared.
Conclusion: The results of our study suggest that individuals with hearing loss had high levels of state anxiety, although this was not the case with trait anxiety. This may be explained by the difficulties in daily activities or social relationships faced by these individuals, and therefore increased levels of state anxiety; however it is suggested that this condition does not cause anxiety in controlling general life situations or general life relationships.
